While many need light-filled rooms for inspiration, he wanted to avoid large windows opening onto a residential neighborhood and sought a cave-like atmosphere to disappear into his work. Subtle light was brought in by other means when the architect built a dome above his client’s desk (which Price describes as similar to the rotunda of the oracle’s temple at Delphi) and filled it with the books he uses the most. Davis whimsically calls the space his “Navajo kiva of knowledge.”

Hoping to put a human face on an agency increasingly under the microscope, LIFE turned to photographer Brooks Kraft. Kraft, who has traveled with U.S. presidents for the past decade, works in close proximity to agents as they crisscross the country and the globe, never far from the most powerful man in the world. In his capacity as a White House photographer for Time, Kraft’s day-to-day access is unparalleled.

Gleaned from thousands of images, this companion set of books offers the best of American print advertising in the age of the “Big Idea.” At the height of American consumerism magazines were flooded with clever campaigns selling everything from girdles to guns.
